Pierre Grimes and the Noetic Society

Overview

The Noetic Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit group with members in Southern California and around the world, who have been inspired to study Homer, Parmenides, the pre-Socratics, Plato, the neo-Platonists, and other perennial philosophers and mystics, not for academic reasons, but for personal spiritual growth. The society was founded by Pierre Grimes, PhD in 1967, and was incorporated in 1978.

(If you would like to help out with this project by reviewing audios and videos and giving them titles, stephanus numbers, and notes, then please contact us either at info at noeticsociety.org, or at my personal address if you know it. I can really use the help! - Thank you. JS)

Searching Our Collection

We have a common set of tags we use for filtering down the talks and items:

  • subject:NSBSNT - Talks at the Theosophical Society's Besant Lodge in Los Angeles
  • subject:NSCHT - Unstructured/impromptu chats or snippets of philosophical conversation
  • subject:NSDRM - Dream Explorations and Philosophical Midwifery
  • subject:NSFRI - Normal dialogues/discussions/study-sessions on Platonic and other perennial-philosophy texts. Over the years, these have usually been held on Friday nights, but not always.
  • subject:NSPRM - Parmenides morning study group
  • subject:NSPRS - Talks at the Philosophical Research Society in Los Angeles
  • subject:NSSAT - Informal chats, usually on Saturday mornings
  • subject:NSSEM - Seminars
  • subject:NSSPE - Special or One-Time Events
  • subject:NSMISC - Everything else
  • subject:nsbduncan - videotape recordings from BillD in the 80's. All of these are also NSFRI's.
  • subject:nsaops - videos recorded by Marty and Yoni 2008-2013 and originally posted to the Academy of Platonic Studies website. All of these are also NSFRI's.

By using 'subject:' within our collection's search box, you can also find all items related to a particular dialogue, such as subject:republic, subject:phaedo, subject:parmenides, subject:iliad, etc. Narrowing searches further is possible by specifying more than one search term with commas, e.g., subject:republic,book01 or subject:parmenides,hyp2 and so on.

You can also use the Advanced Search of the Internet Archive to search within our collection. (In the "Collection .. is .." field, put noeticsociety).

Guidelines for Copying/Re-posting to YouTube, DailyMotion, Vimeo, or elsewhere:

Pierre and we in the Noetic Society wanted to get the beauty and wisdom of Platonism (and all perennial philosophy) out to the world for free. For that reason, you are allowed to copy it (and great! thank you!). People should be able to view and raise themselves up.

However, the material is not in the "public domain".  It is published under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND 4.0 International license.

  • BY (Attribution): You must retain attribution (give credit) to Pierre Grimes (or any of the contributors here) and the NS
  • NC (Non-Commercial): You cannot in any way make money off of these. You-tubers: You cannot monetize your channel with these
  • ND (No-Derivatives): You cannot re-mix or take parts of any production and make it into your own.  (You can, however, quote it.)
  • No additional electronic limitations (such as DRM, etc.)

We request that if you are re-publishing, you respect the terms of this license. Please read the license carefully and thoroughly before considering any re-posting project, so that you know what you are doing, and can help us protect these materials for future generations.

If you have any additional questions regarding our materials, or would like to request permissions beyond these, or just want to be sure your reposting is okay with us, please contact us at info@noeticsociety.org.

If any item published on our archive contains materials published under different terms than the CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license, they are clearly noted specifically under that item. Please also be aware of and respect any exceptional items published under different terms than our default CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 when re-publishing. This is your responsibility when republishing.

See also http://noeticsociety.org/copyright/.

Non-optional:

If you are posting to YouTube (or other place online), then in addition to the above CC terms, you must also do the below to fulfill the terms of the CC license:

  1. Do not Monetize:
Do not monetize your channel. If you do, you'll be violating the 'NC' part of the CC license. If you have other, non-NS vidoes/audios in your channel, which you do want to monetize, then you'll need to split your channels and put our material into your non-monetized channel.
  2. Add License:
Since YouTube does not (yet) support natively the CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license, you must add the following into the Description section of each and every item you repost:

This material is posted under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND 4.0 International license. See https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/.

If you do not do this, you may be re-publishing the material under You-Tube's (or other site's) default license, or a public-domain license -- which violate the terms of the CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license. All material must be republished under the same CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 INT'L license.
  3. Your Channel name:
Do not title your channel, "Pierre Grimes and the Noetic Society", "Pierre Grimes" or "Noetic Society" or anything like that, because then it appears that the channel belongs to us. It doesn't: It's your channel, not ours. So we'd prefer if you named your channel something like, "Fans of Pierre Grimes and the Noetic Society" or "NS Fans" or even "Modern Platonism", etc., or some such, to make it clear that you are someone else. If you do not do this, you might be guilty of false personation and/or of violating the "BY" part of the CC license.

Further, we request (and if you would be so kind)...

  1. Link each video back to its original location:
Also in the Description section of each item you repost, we request that you include a link back to the original item.

For instance, if you are re-posting Pierre's PRS Video, "Direct Understanding and the Attainment of Buddhahood", (PRS video 88), please, in your post's Description section, also publish the link back to the original here on the archive, i.e.,

This material is posted under a Creative Commons BY-NC-ND 4.0 International license. See https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/.

    Original video location:
    https://archive.org/details/19980217NSPRS088

This will help drive traffic back to the archive, which we always appreciate.
  2. "About" tab of your channel:
In the "About" tab of your channel, we'd appreciate your also putting an explanation that your channel is not owned by Pierre or the NS, but that you are just a fan, and including the main web site for the NS and its archive. Sample:

Our channel is not owned by Pierre Grimes and the Noetic Society. But we're great fans! Here are the links back to them:

Dialogue(s): theology-of-plato Chapters: book1;chap01;chap02;chap03 Attendees: Pierre, Barbara, David, Regina, JulieH, Eldar, JeffS Synopsis Pierre leads the Parmenides study group through another morning. We have moved for a while to reading Proclus' Theology of Plato(*), with the object of understanding the Parmenides better, and especially the orders of the gods encoded within. For this morning, we were to have arrived having read the first three chapters of Book 1. And this morning, we went...

Dialogue(s): theology-of-plato Chapters: book06;chap22 Attendees: Pierre, Barbara, David, Regina, JulieH, Eldar, JeffS Synopsis Pierre leads us through another morning of Parmenides study. This is our first day (at least in a while) of studying Proclus' Theology of Plato. This morning we don't read any Parmenides, but instead take an initial dip in the water of Proclus' Theology of Plato. For the first part of the session Pierre leads us through a broad preview/survey/sampling in order to get...

Dialogue(s): parmenides Chapters: hyp1 Sections: 138a,139b-c Attendees: Pierre, Barbara, David, Regina, JulieH, Eldar, JeffS Synopsis Pierre leads the Parmenides morning study group through another morning. Today we are still looking at the arguments in the first hypothesis and trying to decide on the 'cut points' or 'divisions' (i.e., where arguments begin/end). Regina expresses frustration at our (or Pierre's) decisions always changing, and we acknowledge we are struggling with it, too....

Dialogue(s): parmenides Chapters: hyp1 Sections: 137d-138a (P9-P17) Attendees: Pierre, Regina, Eldar, Barbara, JulieH, CathyW, JeffS Today, our Parmenides morning study group works our way through the '2nd argument' of the 1st hypothesis (P9-P17), as usual with Pierre's guidance. We look at the problems encountered. We decide that what at first appear to be conclusions (P7/8 in the 1st argument; P17 in the 2nd) are actually not conclusions, but definitions . And the first and second arguments...

THis is just 'paragraphs' P1-P8. Pierre asks us to reflect on what an argument is, and what a conclusion is (see diagram). First, however, Regina asks a question about P99-103.
